The Opportunity
Market Insights
WILL’S INSIGHTS The Mayacamas range separating Napa and Sonoma County provides some of the greatest opportunities to make world-class wines. One can look at more famous offerings such as Lakoya, Spring Mountain and Mt. Veeder, Pym-Rae, Mayacamas Vineyards, and others that originate from the Mayacamas to understand the additional potential of Viluko. Winemaker Tim Milos is doing a wonderful job at Viluko and understands its full potential has yet to be realized. This property is so much more than a wine estate. The diversity of topography, diversity of flora and fauna, and abundant wildlife supported primarily by the year-round flows of Mark West Creek makes the opportunity at Viluko truly unique. Its ability to effectively mitigate effects of climate change is best understood by all the natural elements of the property – proximity to the Pacific Ocean as associated cooler/damper marine influences, eastern exposures that protect from end of day intense heat, and dramatic topography all play a role that will contribute to this property enduring.
GRAPE MARKET The hillside fruit is produced by Tim Milos annually is excellent. The 2023 harvest will be known as one of the finest in a generation and that is also true at Viluko. The industry reports indicate that wine sales are trending flat to slightly downward so we expect a short-term softening of demand and pricing but quality will always endure.
VARIETALS As per tradition, Cabernet Sauvignon and traditional Bordeaux-style grapes are very successful here. Given the cooler micro-climates, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc have been successful but so has Pinot Noir. Given this diversity, Viluko has a unique opportunity to achieve high quality wines with different varietals as well as different styles. It is believed that a traditional Burgundian Pinot Noir would be very successful here pushing yields above the norm of Sonoma Coast, for instance.
